A little clarity goes a long way
Three things to take away
For parents and carers who have questions about crowding, the way their child's teeth meet, or when to seek orthodontic advice.
- Why dental development matters more than a fixed age for assessment.
- How monitoring, fixed braces and removable appliances have different roles.
- Ways parents can support cleaning, review visits and retainer care.
More about the topics we will explore
Assessment is not a commitment to braces
The right time for assessment depends on dental development and the concern, not simply a birthday. An assessment may lead to monitoring rather than immediate treatment. Ask your usual dentist about concerns with eruption, crowding or your child's bite.
Different needs, different options
Fixed braces, removable appliances and aligners have different roles. Growth, the teeth present and the bite all affect planning. A child's suitability cannot be assessed at a group evening, and NHS eligibility or availability needs a separate discussion with the relevant provider.
Support through treatment
Good cleaning, sensible food choices and attending reviews help reduce problems such as decay and gum inflammation during orthodontics. Braces can cause discomfort and tooth movement carries risks. Retainers and ongoing care are important after active treatment.
Questions you might bring
- What should we monitor as adult teeth come through?
- What would an orthodontic assessment involve?
- How can we help our child with cleaning, appointments and retainers?

You would be very welcome
Curious about the Parents' Orthodontic Evening? Leave your name and email address and we will notify you when the date and arrangements are announced. You can then decide whether to book a place.
These evenings provide general educational information, not a clinical assessment. Individual suitability, treatment risks, plans and costs require a separate dental appointment.
