You've invested in professional whitening and love your brighter smile. Here's how to maintain those results for as long as possible.
The First 48 Hours
Your teeth are most susceptible to staining immediately after whitening. For the first 48 hours:
- Avoid dark foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, berries, curry, tomato sauce)
- Don't smoke
- Stick to 'white' foods: chicken, fish, rice, white pasta, bananas, milk
After 48 hours, your teeth's pores close and normal eating can resume.
Long-Term Maintenance
Your whitening will gradually fade over months and years. To slow this:
- Drink through straws: Reduces contact with staining liquids
- Rinse after coffee/wine: A quick water rinse helps
- Don't smoke: The single biggest cause of re-staining
- Regular hygienist visits: Professional cleaning removes surface stains
Top-Up Whitening
Your custom trays are yours to keep. When you notice fading:
- A single night's top-up often restores brightness
- Most people top up 2-4 times per year
- We sell refill syringes at the practice
This is far more cost-effective than repeating the full treatment.
Toothpaste Choices
Whitening toothpastes don't actually whiten — they contain mild abrasives that remove surface stains. They can help maintain results between top-ups.
We recommend sensitive toothpastes if you experience any sensitivity after whitening.
Managing Sensitivity
Some sensitivity after whitening is normal. To manage it:
- Use sensitive toothpaste for a few days before and after whitening
- Apply sensitivity gel in your trays
- Take a night off between whitening sessions if needed
Sensitivity always resolves after treatment ends.
