Why Gum Health Matters More Than You Think

Most people focus on their teeth, but gum health is equally important — and too often neglected. Gum disease affects over half of UK adults and has consequences beyond your mouth.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease starts with plaque buildup at the gum line. Bacteria in plaque irritate the gums, causing inflammation.

Gingivitis (early stage): Red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Reversible with good care.

Periodontitis (advanced): Infection spreads below the gum line, destroying bone that supports teeth. Eventually leads to tooth loss. Manageable but not reversible.

Warning Signs

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Receding gums (teeth look longer)
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in how teeth fit together

Many people ignore bleeding gums — "my gums always bleed." This isn't normal. It's your gums telling you something's wrong.

The Link to Overall Health

Research increasingly links gum disease to:

  • Heart disease: Gum bacteria can enter the bloodstream and contribute to arterial plaque
  • Diabetes: Gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control, and diabetes increases gum disease risk
  • Respiratory disease: Bacteria can be inhaled into the lungs
  • Pregnancy complications: Links to premature birth and low birth weight

Looking after your gums is looking after your whole body.

How to Protect Your Gums

At home:

- Brush twice daily, angling bristles toward the gum line

- Clean between teeth daily (floss, interdental brushes, or water flosser)

- Don't skip the gum line — it's where problems start

Professionally:

- Regular hygienist appointments (we recommend every 3-6 months)

- Our 60-minute appointments include thorough gum assessment

- Early detection allows early treatment

Treatment for Gum Disease

Treatment depends on severity:

Gingivitis: Professional cleaning plus improved home care usually resolves it.

Periodontitis: Deep cleaning below the gum line (root planing), possibly over multiple appointments. Sometimes referral to a periodontist for advanced cases.

The earlier we catch it, the simpler the treatment.
