Congratulations on completing your Invisalign treatment! Now the important part: keeping your teeth straight for life. Here's what you need to know.

The Critical Truth About Retainers

Your teeth will move back without retainers. This isn't a maybe — it's biology. Teeth have memory and want to return to their original positions.

Every orthodontic client needs lifelong retention. Wear your retainers as instructed and your results will last. Skip them, and your teeth will shift.

Retainer Options

Fixed retainers: A thin wire bonded behind your front teeth. Works 24/7 without you thinking about it. We recommend these for lower teeth especially.

Removable retainers: Clear trays similar to aligners. Worn at night. Easy to clean but require discipline.

Many clients have fixed retainers plus removable retainers as backup.

How Long to Wear Retainers

First year: Removable retainers every night. This is non-negotiable.

After first year: Gradually reduce to 3-5 nights per week. Some people wear them forever; others find they can reduce further.

Fixed retainers: Left permanently in place. Checked at regular appointments.

Caring for Your Retainers

Removable retainers:

- Clean daily with a soft toothbrush and cold water

- Use retainer cleaning tablets weekly

- Never use hot water (warping)

- Store in your case when not wearing

Fixed retainers:

- Clean carefully around the wire when brushing

- Use interdental brushes or floss threaders

- Regular hygienist appointments

What If You Notice Movement?

If your teeth start to shift:

  • Put your retainer in immediately and wear full-time
  • Contact us to check the fit
  • Minor movement can often be corrected with retainer wear
  • Significant movement may need refinement aligners

The sooner you act, the easier the fix.

Retainer Replacement

Removable retainers wear out over time. Expect to replace them every 1-2 years. We keep your records and can make new ones quickly.

Fixed retainers can last many years but occasionally debond. Check yours regularly and contact us if it feels loose.
