Brushing your teeth is a part of any healthy person’s daily routine. While brushing your teeth is a good start to ensuring your mouth stays healthy, brushing alone isn’t enough. Here are some of the things you can do to bolster your tooth brushing efforts and retain your natural teeth for life.
Visiting the dentist

Teeth are rubbish at giving you “early warnings” and teeth have a very limited capacity to repair themselves. Therefore a preventive mindset is needed to keep them healthy. This is why in the early, optimistic days of the NHS, preventive “check-ups” were provided for every six months, whilst you were only recommended to see your GP if you felt unwell. Early detection of decay and gum disease are crucial for successful treatment.

Tooth wear and erosion is another problem. There’s no way to reverse the damage. However, coming in to see the dentist twice a year can ensure developing problems with your teeth are nipped in the bud early and before they seriously compromise your teeth.

A close examination of your mouth allows us to pick up on hard-to-see and symptomless problems that you are unlikely to spot at home. With this in mind, a dental appointment could save you from losing a tooth and from undergoing more invasive treatment in the future.

Visiting the hygienist

In the UK, a third of adults don’t regularly visit a hygienist, putting them at increased risk of gum disease and associated unpleasant symptoms. These can range from bleeding gums and bad breath to loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. Checking in with the hygienist regularly will ensure the plaque which builds up along the gum line when you eat doesn’t have a chance to turn to tartar and threaten the health of your gums.

When you come in to see us, we’ll first examine your gums before we can advise on how often to come in for appointments. This will depend on factors such as:

- If you are developing the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis)
- If you have advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
- Whether you are a smoker
- Genetic predispositions; some people need more help to stay healthy
- If you are pregnant. Pregnant women are more susceptible to gum disease because of changing hormone levels during their pregnancy. The shift in hormones can trigger the body to react differently to bacteria in the mouth.

Cleaning between your teeth

Flossing isn’t the only way of cleaning between your teeth. In fact, we recommend many people to use alternate techniques. Your hygienist will recommend the most appropriate technique and kit to effectively clean the hard-to-reach areas.
